In the last few years, we have seen many municipalities across North America place a major focus on waste management by encouraging composting and minimizing garbage.
Many cities like Toronto, have implemented a garbage bag limit as a way to get citizens to consider options like kitchen composting a benefit, while other areas like San Francisco have mandated the curbside Green Bin Program for all residents.
Vancouver has gone even further by setting very aggressive sustainability goals after realizing the city's environmental footprint is three times larger than the earth can sustain. For this reason, it has embarked on the Greenest City 2020 initiative; a bold set of environmental targets that will make it the greenest city in the world by 2020.
Although the future is unknown, the harsh reality is that we must increase our efforts to create a sustainable environment. Composting does make a significant difference.
